style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What\u2019s Your Reputation?<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;tab-stops:13.5pt .5in 2.5in 238.5pt 337.5pt\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\">When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>There a centurion&#8217;s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, &#8220;This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>So Jesus went with them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>&#8220;Lord, don&#8217;t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But say the word, and my servant will be healed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I tell this one, &#8216;Go,&#8217; and he goes; and that one &#8216;Come,&#8217; and he comes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I say to my servant, &#8216;Do this,&#8217; and he does it.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">&#8220;I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(NIV1984)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">\u201cThat doesn\u2019t surprise me.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How often do you hear that statement in reference to someone else?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How often have you spoken those words in reference to someone else?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now by itself the statement, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t surprise me,\u201d is a completely neutral statement.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That statement, however, becomes either positive or negative depending on whom it is spoken about.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If you hear on the news that a certain celebrity or a certain athlete is in trouble with the law\u2014 again! \u2014 you might say, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t surprise me.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If you see on the news that Bill Gates is introducing a revolutionary type of computer program you might say, \u201cThat doesn\u2019t surprise me.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The sermon text that we have before us today, my friends, gives to us a very good opportunity to look at a subject that we don\u2019t discuss very often.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The subject is\u2014 our <i>reputation.<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>This portion of God\u2019s holy Word focuses our attention on a man whose name we do not even know!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What we do know about him is his <i>reputation!<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Today then let\u2019s look at the example that a Roman centurion sets for us and then use that example to ask ourselves the question\u2014 <b><i>What\u2019s Your Reputation?<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>There are two things we want to consider this morning when it comes to a person\u2019s reputation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>First let\u2019s consider the fact that a person\u2019s reputation in the eyes of others is oftentimes determined by the actions of their life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then let\u2019s see that a person\u2019s reputation in the eyes of others is oftentimes confirmed by the attitude of their heart\u2014 the attitude that is revealed by the words that they speak.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">I direct your attention to the opening portion of our text.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Here we are able to see how the centurion\u2019s reputation was indeed evidenced by the actions of his life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Look at verses two and three.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Luke writes, <i>\u201cThere <\/i><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:italic\">(in Capernaum) <i>a centurion\u2019s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.\u201d<\/i><\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>While there were undoubtedly countless servants in the Roman Empire whose masters would have simply tossed them out into the streets if they became sick and were about to die, this Roman centurion actually cared about his servant!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In fact, we\u2019re told that he valued this servant so highly that when the servant became deathly ill his master did something to help his servant.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He turned to the only Person who had the power to heal\u2014 Jesus of Nazareth!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Was this simply a \u201cflash-in-the-pan\u201d type of concern?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Was this Roman centurion kind of like a \u201cSunday morning Christian\u201d?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Was he like someone who turns to God when they are in trouble, but has no time and no need for God when things are going well?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Not at all!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Look at verses four and five of our text.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Luke continues, <i>\u201cWhen they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, \u2018This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.\u2019\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We simply cannot overlook how extraordinary these words are! This Roman centurion was an officer in the army which had conquered and was now occupying the land which the Lord had promised to the descendants of Abraham.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And yet, even though this man was an officer in the army that was occupying their land, the elders of the Jews are not only <i>willing<\/i> to go to Jesus on behalf of this man, but they <i>\u201cpleaded earnestly\u201d<\/i> with Jesus to grant the centurion\u2019s request!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Why?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>This Roman centurion had gained a <i>reputation<\/i> among God\u2019s people\u2014 a <i>reputation<\/i> that was evidenced by the actions of his life!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As a convert to Judaism this Roman centurion not only loved God\u2019s people, but he even built a synagogue so that God\u2019s people could have a place to gather together and worship the one and only true God!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What a wonderful example this man has set for us, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How well are we doing at following that example?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do we have a reputation for honestly and genuinely caring about other people\u2014 or, do we have a reputation for caring mostly about ourselves?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do we have a reputation for loving the family of believers, our brothers and sisters in the faith\u2014 or, do we have a reputation for being \u201ccold\u201d and \u201ccritical\u201d and \u201ccliquish\u201d?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do we have a reputation for loving the Lord so very much that we gladly and generously support His congregation so that we can gather together to worship our Savior God as well as reach out to others who do not yet know Him\u2014 or, do we have a reputation for giving only enough offerings to pacify our conscience or to support a \u201cbare-bones\u201d budget?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Are the people who see us on a regular basis\u2014 the people who know us so very well\u2014 are they able to see that our Christian faith is an important part of our daily life no matter where we are, no matter what we are doing, no matter who we are with\u2014 or, do we have the reputation for being a \u201cSunday morning Christian\u201d?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What do the actions of our life say about us?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What kind of <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">reputation<\/i> do we have in the eyes of others?<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Just as we gain a reputation with others by the actions of our life, so also our reputation is confirmed by the attitude of our heart\u2014 an attitude that other people are able to see and hear by listening to how we speak.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Look at verses six to eight of our text.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Luke writes, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cSo Jesus went with them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I say to my servant, \u201cDo this,\u201d and he does it.\u2019\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">If you were asked to describe this man\u2019s attitude using just one word\u2014 what word would you choose?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I would choose the word \u201chumble.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As a military officer this man understood authority very very well.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As a true believer in the Lord this man realized that Jesus possesses an authority that far surpasses any and every other authority.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We can see and hear the humble attitude of this man\u2019s heart when he says to Jesus, <i>\u201cLord, do not trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof\u2026But say the word, and my servant will be healed.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What a wonderful example this man has set for us, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How well are we doing at following that example?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>People do indeed listen to us, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>They not only listen to what we say, but they listen to how we talk.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What do they learn about us as they listen to us?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When people listen to us are they able to hear the kind of humility that we see in this Roman centurion?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Or, when people listen to us do we gain a reputation for being arrogant or prejudice or self-centered or uncaring\u2014 or worse!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What is <b>your<\/b> reputation, my friends? What do other people think of when they think of you?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What words would they use to describe you to someone else?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What kind of example are you setting for your children, your grandchildren, your siblings, your fellow Christians?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I am going to suggest to you this morning that you not only take some time to consciously ponder questions such as those, but that you also take some time to ponder what our Lord says concerning this Roman centurion in verse nine of our text.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus says, <i>\u201cI tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What was the basis of this man\u2019s reputation?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What motivated the actions of this man\u2019s life?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What inspired the humble attitude of this man\u2019s heart?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was his <b>faith<\/b>, wasn\u2019t it!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was the very same faith that by the grace of God now lives in your hearts as well!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">As we grow and mature in our faith through regular study of God\u2019s holy Word and regular reception of God\u2019s holy Sacrament, then like this Roman centurion our faith will have a more and more powerful impact on the actions of our life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As our love for the Lord and our thankfulness for what He has done for us (pointing to the cross) grows stronger and deeper, then like this Roman centurion that love and that thankfulness will have a more and more powerful impact on the attitude of our heart\u2014 the attitude that is revealed in the way that we speak.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>By God\u2019s grace and with God\u2019s help we can indeed follow the example that the Roman centurion gives to us here in our text for today.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>By God\u2019s grace and with God\u2019s help our Christian faith can be the focal point of our reputation.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Personally, I don\u2019t think it is purely by coincidence that we do not know this Roman centurion\u2019s name, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Far more important than his name is his reputation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Through the actions of his life and through the words which revealed the attitude of his heart this man has a reputation that has lasted for almost 2,000 years\u2014 a reputation for loving the Lord his God, a reputation for loving the family of believers, a reputation for caring about other people, a reputation for supporting God\u2019s church, a reputation for having a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cgreat faith\u201d<\/i>\u2014 a faith that was open and evident in his life!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What do you want people to say about you when your name comes up in a conversation?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When your parents or your children or your friends or your co-workers think about you what words do you want to go through their mind?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When you are gone from this earth what do you want people to remember about you?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>My prayer this morning is very simple.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I pray that the good Lord will help each of us to have the same kind of <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">reputation<\/i> that this Roman centurion has\u2014 a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">reputation<\/i> that can be seen in the way we live our life, a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">reputation<\/i> that can be heard in the way that we talk, a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">reputation<\/i> that enables the good Lord to say about us, <i>\u201cI tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;
