style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Did you know that today, Pentecost Sunday, is the third of the three <b>major<\/b> festivals of the Church year?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It\u2019s true!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Historically, the Christian church has placed Pentecost Sunday on an equal par with both Christmas and Easter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Why?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Look at it this way, my friends:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Christmas and Easter remind us and assure us of what the Lord God Almighty has freely done <b>for <\/b>us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Christmas and Easter remind us and assure us that the Son of God Himself came into this world to live for us, to die for us and to rise again for us and for our salvation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Pentecost reminds us and assures us of how all the benefits of Jesus\u2019 saving work become our <b>personal <\/b>possession.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">With that glorious truth in mind let\u2019s see how our sermon text for this Pentecost Sunday focuses our attention on:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b><i>The Work of the Holy Spirit!<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>There are two things we want to see this morning.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>First, let\u2019s see how God the Holy Spirit works <b>in <\/b>us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then, let\u2019s see how God the Holy Spirit works <b>through <\/b>us.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">There is one \u201ckey\u201d word in our text that I would like to spend some time discussing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is the word that is translated here as <i>\u201cCounselor.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In the Greek this is the word <i>\u201cparaclete.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As a verb this Greek word very literally means, <i>\u201cto call to one\u2019s side.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As a noun this Greek word can be translated as, <i>\u201ccounselor, comforter, or helper.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>This noun is used only five times in the entire New Testament Scriptures\u2014 all by the apostle John.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is used four times in reference to the Holy Spirit (John 14:16, 26; John 15:26; John 16:7) and once in reference to Jesus (I John 2:1).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As we gather to celebrate the Festival of Pentecost today let\u2019s look at the four times that this word is used in reference to the Holy Spirit so that we can indeed grow\u2014 grow in our understanding of, grow in our appreciation for the work of God the Holy Spirit.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">We\u2019ll begin with our text for today.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>John records these words of our Savior, <i>\u201cWhen the Counselor (Paraclete) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As we heard in our reading from the book of Acts this morning (Acts 2:1-21) Jesus fulfilled this promise to His disciples on the Day of Pentecost.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Scripture very clearly emphasizes that the work of the Holy Spirit is focused on one central activity, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the <i>\u201cSpirit of truth\u201d<\/i> God the Holy Spirit <i>\u201ccalls people to His side\u201d<\/i> so that He can <i>\u201ctestify\u201d<\/i> concerning Jesus!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s precisely why Martin Luther taught us to confess, \u201cI believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If it were not for the Holy Spirit working <b>in <\/b>us we would not and we could not believe or trust or confess Jesus as our Lord!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(See 1 Corinthians 12:3).<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">How?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How does the Spirit \u201cwork\u201d in us?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What \u201cmeans,\u201d what \u201ctools\u201d does He use?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>For that we turn to two other passages where John refers to the Holy Spirit as the <i>\u201cCounselor,\u201d<\/i> as the <i>\u201cParaclete.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>First let\u2019s look at John 14:16 &amp; 26.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In the Upper Room on Maundy Thursday Jesus said to His disciples, <i>\u201cI will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever\u2014 the Spirit of truth\u2026But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">We live in a world where people are turning to all kinds of \u201ccounselors\u201d and all kinds of \u201cguides\u201d to \u201chelp\u201d them find their way through life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>For some people their \u201cguide\u201d is measured in dollar signs and material possessions.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>For others their \u201chelp\u201d through life is found in power and popularity.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>For still others the quest for physical pleasures becomes the \u201cguiding force\u201d in their life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>People are searching for help, my friends!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That is why psychics and mediums are still very popular today!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That is why there are so many 1-866 numbers where for <b>only <\/b>$7.00 to $13.00 per minute some \u201ccounselor\u201d will help you understand both yourself and your life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In the end, however, each and every one of these so-called \u201cguides\u201d utterly and completely fails!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In the end, each and every one of these so-called \u201ccounselors\u201d leaves people feeling abandoned and empty, used and tossed aside like last Sunday\u2019s newspaper.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">As <b><i>the <\/i><\/b><i>\u201cCounselor,\u201d<\/i> as <b><i>the<\/i><\/b> <i>\u201cHelper,\u201d<\/i> as <b><i>the<\/i><\/b><i> \u201cParaclete\u201d<\/i> God the Holy Spirit <i>\u201ccalls us to His side\u201d<\/i> through the written revealed Word of God\u2014 the Word which He Himself has given to us through the apostles and prophets!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When we are feeling lonely, when we are afraid, when we are overwhelmed by the uncertainty of the future or burdened by the guilt and the failures of our past, when we are faced with illness or injury or even death\u2014 what we as the saved children of God need to do is open up this Book and listen!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Yes, no matter what situation you find yourself in, my friends, your <i>\u201cCounselor,\u201d<\/i> your<i> \u201cParaclete\u201d \u201ccalls you to His side\u201d <\/i>to comfort you and to encourage you and to strengthen you through the power of His holy Word!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s why it is so important for us to have contact with God\u2019s Word on a regular basis.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>This is how the Holy Spirit continues to work <b>in <\/b>us each and every day!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">There is one aspect of the Holy Spirit\u2019s work<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"> in<\/b> us, however, that is absolutely necessary even though it is not always pleasant.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In John 16:7-8 we hear Jesus say, <i>\u201cBut I tell you the truth:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is for your good that I am going away.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Part of the Holy Spirit\u2019s work<b> in <\/b>us is indeed to <i>\u201cconvict\u201d<\/i> us of the <i>\u201cguilt\u201d<\/i> of our sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When we consciously rebel against the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth by either doing something we know we should not be doing or by refusing to do what we know our Lord wants us to do, when in weakness we stumble and fall in our walk with our Lord, the Holy Spirit will strive to <i>\u201ccall us to His side.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then using the powerful message of the Law He will <i>\u201cconvict\u201d<\/i> us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He might use our conscience to make us realize our guilt.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He might use our parents or our children or our friends to point out our sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He might use something that is said in a sermon or something that is brought up in a Bible class to make us feel like we\u2019ve been \u201ccaught\u201d or \u201cfound out.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>No matter how He <i>\u201cconvicts\u201d<\/i> us, my friends, the Holy Spirit always has just one primary goal\u2014 to point us to the cross of Jesus (Pointing to the cross), our <b><i>only <\/i><\/b>source of forgiveness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>So if and when the Holy Spirit works in you by <i>\u201cconvicting\u201d<\/i> you of the <i>\u201cguilt\u201d<\/i> of your sin, remember:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He does this because of His tremendous love for you!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Nothing makes the Holy Spirit happier than when a repentant child of God looks to the cross on Calvary\u2019s hill and trusts in what Jesus has done <b>for<\/b> them.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Once the Holy Spirit has worked <b>in <\/b>us through the power of His Word then we will understand and appreciate and rejoice in the work that the Holy Spirit does <b>through<\/b> us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Look at the second verse of our text for today.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus says, <i>\u201cAnd you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">We all know how faithfully Jesus\u2019 disciples <i>\u201ctestified\u201d<\/i> to others about what Jesus has done for this world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now it is our turn, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now it is our turn to <i>\u201ctestify\u201d<\/i> to others about this world\u2019s only Savior from sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And if for any reason you feel hesitant, if for any reason you feel unable to <i>\u201ctestify\u201d<\/i> about Jesus let me point out two things.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>First, the Greek word that is translated here in our text as <i>\u201ctestify\u201d<\/i> \u2014 both in connection with the Holy Spirit as well as in connection with us\u2014 this word can also be translated as <i>\u201cwitness.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>All God has asked you to do is be His <i>\u201cwitness\u201d<\/i> in this world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Tell others what Jesus means to you!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Tell others what Jesus has done for you!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Secondly, remember that Jesus Himself has promised that the Holy Spirit will help us as we <i>\u201ctestify\u201d<\/i> about our Savior!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(See Mark 13:11; Matthew 10:19-20; Luke 12:11-12)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He is the One who works <b>in <\/b>others by working <b>through <\/b>us!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">In some ways it is unfortunate that the Festival of Pentecost rarely receives the kind of emphasis that we give to both Christmas and Easter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>At the same time it is perfectly understandable.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the \u201cshy\u201d member of the Holy Trinity the Holy Spirit does not want the spotlight shined on Him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Whether it is the work that the Holy Spirit does <b>in <\/b>us or whether it is the work that the Holy Spirit does <b>through <\/b>us His goal is to always keep us focused on what Jesus has done <b>for <\/b>us (Pointing to the cross).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">My prayer then on this Pentecost Sunday is that we will all strive to make the Holy Spirit smile!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Make Him smile by maintaining regular contact with the Word that He has given to us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Make Him smile by keeping your heart and your life focused on the cross of Calvary\u2019s hill!
