<\/span>If you asked that question at work or at school you would undoubtedly get a variety of answers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>For some people Easter is all about the bunny, the colorful eggs and the basket of candy.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>For others Easter is all about fancy new clothes, time off from school and work and a nice dinner with family and friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Is that really what Easter is all about?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Is that what you and I have spent the last six weeks getting ready for?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Absolutely not!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Today as we gather together to celebrate the most glorious day of the year our goal is to focus on the \u201cheart\u201d of what Easter is all about by focusing on\u2014 <b><i>The Easter Gospel!<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Using this portion of I Corinthians 15 let\u2019s celebrate three things this morning.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>First, let\u2019s celebrate the fact that the Easter Gospel is the basis of your salvation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then let\u2019s celebrate the fact that the Easter Gospel is the basis of the Christian faith.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Finally, let\u2019s celebrate the fact that the Easter Gospel is the basis of who you are!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">First Corinthians chapter fifteen has long been known as the \u201cGreat Resurrection Chapter\u201d of the Bible.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>From verse one to verse fifty-eight this entire chapter of Scripture focuses our attention on what Easter is all about!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Yet, did you notice, my friends, that Paul never once mentions the Easter bunny or a basket filled with candy and eggs?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Did you notice that Paul doesn\u2019t even talk about the Easter breakfast that we enjoy year after year here at church or the delicious Easter dinner we enjoy with our family and our friends?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Paul begins the \u201cGreat Resurrection Chapter\u201d of the Bible by immediately focusing our attention on the \u201cheart\u201d of Easter\u2014 the Easter Gospel!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Look at verses 1 &amp; 2.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Paul writes, <i>\u201cNow, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you have received and on which you have taken your stand.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Otherwise, you have believed in vain.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><i><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><i><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">\u201cBy this gospel you are saved\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\"> That\u2019s what the apostle Paul proclaims to us on this glorious Easter morning!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But what is the <i>\u201cgospel\u201d<\/i> that Paul is referring to here?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I\u2019ll give you a hint!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Greek word that is translated here as <i>\u201cgospel\u201d<\/i> very literally means <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i>!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> does Easter proclaim to us?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> is the basis of our salvation?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> that Paul is talking about here in our text, the <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> that Easter proclaims to us, the <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> that is the basis of your salvation is the <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> that the Easter angel announced to the faithful women on that first Easter Sunday: <i>\u201cDo not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He is not here; he has risen, just as he said\u201d<\/i> (Matthew 28:5-6).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> that Paul is talking about here in our text, the <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> that Easter proclaims to us, the <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> that is the basis of your salvation is the <i>\u201cgood news\u201d<\/i> that the risen Christ Himself proclaimed to His fear-filled disciples there in that locked room somewhere in Jerusalem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The apostle John tells us, <i>\u201cJesus came and stood among them and said, \u2018Peace be with you!\u2019<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>After he said this, he showed them his hands and side\u201d<\/i> (John 20:19-20).<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The Easter Gospel, my friends, the <i>\u201cGood News\u201d<\/i> which serves as the very basis of your salvation is that Jesus, the true Son of God, died to completely pay for all of your sins and then physically rose from the dead to guarantee <b><i>your<\/i><\/b> eternal salvation!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If it were not for <b>both<\/b> the innocent suffering and death of God\u2019s only begotten Son (pointing to the cross) <b>and <\/b>the physical resurrection of Jesus the Christ on Easter Sunday <b><i>your <\/i><\/b>salvation would be completely impossible!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>With His death and with His physical resurrection as the basis of your salvation now <b><i>your<\/i><\/b> salvation is secure!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now that\u2019s <i>\u201cGood News\u201d<\/i>!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Since the Easter Gospel is indeed the basis of your salvation it follows that the Easter Gospel is also the basis of the entire Christian faith.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Look at verses 3-8 or our text.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Paul writes, <i>\u201cFor what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: <span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;<\/span>that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Does this portion of Scripture sound somewhat familiar to you? Doesn\u2019t it remind you of the Second Article of the Apostles\u2019 Creed\u2014 the Creed that has expressed the truths of the Christian faith for approximately 2,000 years?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The true Christian faith teaches that God has two \u201crequirements\u201d for anyone to live in His heavenly home.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>First, God requires that you must be holy and perfect, just as He is holy and perfect.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Secondly, God requires that you must have absolutely no sin whatsoever.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>On our own that\u2019s impossible! On our own we have <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">no <\/b>holiness, no perfection at all!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>On our own we have <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">nothing but<\/b> sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s why the true Christian faith teaches that Jesus died to <b><i>take away<\/i><\/b> your sins.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s why the true Christian faith teaches that by trusting in what Jesus has done <b><i>for <\/i><\/b>you (pointing to the cross) you are given\u2014 absolutely free of charge\u2014 you are given the gift of holiness, the gift of righteousness, the gift of perfection that you need to live in the very presence of God forever!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">At the same time, the true Christian faith teaches that Jesus <b><i>physically <\/i><\/b>rose from the dead on the third day to <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">prove<\/b>\u2014 to prove that Jesus is who He claims to be, the true Son of the one and only living God, to prove that Jesus has defeated sin, death and the devil and to prove that Jesus can and will fulfill all of His promises\u2014 including His promise to raise us from the dead.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And just so that there can be no doubt whatsoever that Jesus did indeed <b><i>physically <\/i><\/b>rise from the dead Paul lists six different occasions on which the risen Christ appeared to His disciples during the forty days between His resurrection and His ascension into heaven.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>So yes, my friends, the Easter Gospel is indeed the basis of the entire Christian faith for the Easter Gospel clearly proclaims that Jesus died to take away your sins and then physically rose from the dead to guarantee that one day He will take you to live with Him forever in heaven!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now that\u2019s <i>\u201cGood News\u201d<\/i>!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The final point that we want to glean from this text is found in verses 9 &amp; 10.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Here in these verses Paul both expresses and confesses a truth that applies to each and every one of us:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>the Easter Gospel is the basis of who we <b><i>are<\/i><\/b>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Paul writes, <i>\u201cFor I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But by the grace of God I am what I am.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The Easter Gospel reminds us that we are who we are purely by the grace of God alone, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Scripture very clearly teaches that by nature we were born spiritually blind, spiritually dead and spiritually the enemies of God and there is absolutely nothing we can do to change that spiritual condition.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But when God\u2019s Holy Spirit shined the message of the Easter Gospel into our hearts and brought us to saving faith He changed us!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Easter Gospel proclaims to us that by the grace of God we are a Christian.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Easter Gospel proclaims to us that by the grace of God we were adopted to be God\u2019s dearly beloved child.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Easter Gospel proclaims to us that by the grace of God we <b><i>are<\/i><\/b> forgiven of <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">all<\/b> of our sins!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Easter Gospel proclaims to us that by the grace of God we <b><i>are<\/i><\/b> saved!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>So yes, my friends, the Easter Gospel is most certainly the basis of who we <b><i>are<\/i><\/b>!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Easter Gospel enables us to joyfully say along with the apostle Paul, <i>\u201cBut by the grace of God I am what I am.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now that\u2019s <i>\u201cGood News\u201d<\/i>!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What is Easter all about?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Without the Easter Gospel there is really no Easter at all, is there.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Without the Easter Gospel there is just eggs and candy and the bunny.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Without the Easter Gospel there is just a dinner with our family and friends and maybe even some time off from work and school.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Ah, but with the Easter Gospel there is comfort and confidence!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>With the Easter Gospel there is a joy and a celebration that literally lasts into eternity!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>My prayer then on this glorious Easter Sunday is that you will indeed stay focused on the very \u201cheart\u201d of Easter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Stay focused on the Easter Gospel and celebrate!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Celebrate the fact that the Easter Gospel is the basis of your salvation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Celebrate the fact that the Easter Gospel is the basis of your faith.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Celebrate the fact that the Easter Gospel is the basis of who you are!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">He is risen!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;
