style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">John 2:1-11<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Commit It and Forget It!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify;tab-stops:13.5pt .5in 2.5in 238.5pt 337.5pt\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt\">On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus&#8217; mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When the wine was gone, Jesus&#8217; mother said to him, &#8220;They have no more wine.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">&#8220;Dear woman, why do you involve me?\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus replied.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">&#8220;My time has not yet come.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>His mother said to the servants, &#8220;Do whatever he tells you.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus said to the servants, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">&#8220;Fill the jars with water\u201d; <\/i>so they filled them to the brim.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then he told them, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">&#8220;Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, &#8220;Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.&#8221;<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(NIV1984)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Do you remember a man by the name of Ron Popeil?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What if I told you that he is a world-famous inventor and the father of the infomercial?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do names such as the Chop-O-Matic, Mr. Microphone, the Veg-O-Matic and the Rhinestone stud setter ring a bell?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How about phrases such as \u201cAs Seen on TV,\u201d But wait, there\u2019s more,\u201d \u201cNow how much would you pay?\u201d and of course, \u201cLess Shipping and Handling\u201d?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Back in the 1950\u2019s and 1960\u2019s Ron Popeil, his inventions and his infomercials were household names and household staples.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>One of his best known inventions was his rotisserie oven.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Along with that invention he made an infomercial that included the famous slogan, \u201cSet it and forget it!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>You put the food in.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>You set the oven.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>You walk away.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>No mess.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>No fuss.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Set it and forget it!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">That memorable saying gives us a good handle to us as we look at this very familiar portion of Scripture.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our goal today is to see how Mary gives us an example of someone who commits their troubles to Jesus and forgets them\u2014 <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">knowing <\/b>that He will take care of them!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>With that perspective in mind let\u2019s study our text under the theme:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">Commit It and Forget It!<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">The situation confronting Jesus here in John 2 was straightforward and simple:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He was a guest at a wedding where they ran out of wine.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>At the very least this would have been a very embarrassing situation for the groom and his bride.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>At the very worst it would have been utterly humiliating for the new couple.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We get the impression that Mary was close enough to the bride and groom that she was not only involved in serving at this wedding, but she also had some authority over the servants.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>John gives us that impression when he writes, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cWhen the wine was gone, Jesus\u2019 mother said to him, \u2018They have no more wine.\u2019<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>\u2018Dear woman, why do you involve me?\u2019 Jesus replied.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>\u2018My time has not yet come.\u2019<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>His mother said to the servants, \u2018Do whatever he tells you.\u2019\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Why did Mary go to Jesus and say, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cThey have no more wine\u201d<\/i>?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Did she share this situation with her Son simply because she felt bad for this couple?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Or, did she expect her Son Jesus would do something about this situation?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Since Mary believed what the angel Gabriel had told her some thirty years prior to this wedding (<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cThe Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God\u201d<\/i> {Luke 1:35}) and since Mary remembered what Jesus had said to her after she and Joseph frantically searched for their twelve-year-old Son in Jerusalem (<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cDon\u2019t you know that I must be about My Father\u2019s business?\u201d<\/i> {Luke 2:49}) we cannot rule out the possibility that Mary was indeed expecting her Son to perform a miracle to solve this very embarrassing and potentially humiliating situation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In fact, Jesus\u2019 reply to Mary seems to point us in that direction.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Very literally Jesus said to Mary, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cWhat is there between me and you, woman?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">My hour<\/b> has not yet come.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>While this answer may indeed sound a little harsh to our ears, in reality it was more formal than harsh.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus wanted Mary to know that their relationship was no longer a mother\/Son relationship.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now that Jesus had entered into the public phase of His ministry His relationship with Mary was now a Lord\/disciple relationship.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Mary needed to understand that Jesus already knew what He was going to do\u2014 when the time was right.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Mary\u2019s reaction to Jesus\u2019 response is what gives us our sermon theme for today:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">Commit It and Forget It!<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Notice that Mary did not question Jesus.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Nor did Mary not walk away dejected and disappointed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Mary had brought the problem to Jesus trusting that He could and would do what is best.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then she simply turned to the servants and said to them, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cDo whatever he tells you.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Mary had incredible faith in Jesus!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Even though it might seem to us as though Mary had been rebuffed, Mary <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">knew <\/b>that Jesus would take care of the situation\u2014 in His own time, in His own way\u2014 and we might add for His own purpose!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Jesus\u2019 purpose for taking care of this problem was not simply to save this bride and groom from an embarrassing\/humiliating situation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>No, my friends, Jesus\u2019 purpose for taking care of this problem is clearly brought out in the closing verse of our text, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cThis, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus\u2019 miracles were never designed to impress or entertain the people the people around Him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus\u2019 miracles were designed to reveal to the people that they needed to listen to His teachings and put their faith in Him as the long-awaited Promised Messiah, their only Lord and Savior.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(See John 10:37, 38; 14:11; 20:30, 31)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Have you ever been in a situation like Mary\u2019s situation here in our text?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Have you ever brought a problem to your Lord, but it <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">seemed<\/b> as though He wasn\u2019t listening or wasn\u2019t willing to help?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Have you ever felt as if your prayers get as far as the ceiling and then they just kinda get stuck there?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If so, you are not alone.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In Psalm 6 we hear an anguished King David cry out, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cHow long, O Lord, how long?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love\u201d<\/i> (verse 3).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In Psalm 13 King David cries out, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cHow long, O Lord?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Will you forget me forever?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How long will you hide your face from me?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart?\u201d<\/i> (Verses 1, 2).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And in the book of Habakkuk we hear the Lord\u2019s prophet lift up this complaint to heaven, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cHow long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Or cry out to you, \u2018Violence!\u2019 but you do not save?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Why do you make me look at injustice?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Why do you tolerate wrong?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflicts abound\u201d<\/i> (1:2, 3).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Yes, my friends, there are indeed times when a child of God brings their problem to the Lord in prayer and it <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">seems <\/b>as though the Lord either does not hear them or is slow in responding to their prayer.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">What do you need to commit to the Lord, my friends?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Is there a health problem that is causing you to lose sleep?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Has one of your children or one of your grandchildren done or not done something that fills your heart with grief?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Have your well-thought-out plans unraveled uncontrollably right before your very eyes?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Has your retirement taken a turn that you never expected?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Are you wresting with the decisions that are\u2014 or are not\u2014 being made in Sacramento or in Washington?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What problems or what situations seem to be simply overwhelming you?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Whatever it is\u2014 commit it to your Lord in prayer and forget it!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But what does that mean?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It means two things.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">First of all, it means that like Mary here in our text you go directly to Jesus and tell Him about your problem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Scripture assures us that as a Christian we not only have the right to approach God\u2019s eternal throne of grace with <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cfreedom and confidence\u201d<\/i> (Ephesians 3:120, but Scripture also assures us that in Him (Pointing to the cross) we know that we have someone who not only <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">understands<\/b> the problems we face in this world but we also have Someone who has both the power and the will to help us!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>So whatever it is, no matter how big your problem may seem, no matter how overwhelming the situation might be, take it to Jesus in prayer and say, \u201cLord, I need you to fulfill your promises and take care of this for me!\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Once you have taken it to Jesus in prayer, once you have committed your problem to the Lord\u2014 then forget it!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Notice that even though Jesus\u2019 response to Mary seemed rather harsh and very formal, Mary didn\u2019t try to figure out any other solution to this very embarrassing problem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Mary had so much trust in Jesus that she <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">knew <\/b>He would take care of this situation\u2014 in His own time and in His own way.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s why Mary immediately turned to the servants and said, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cDo whatever he tells you.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">From my experience committing a problem to the Lord by taking it to Jesus in prayer is the \u201ceasy\u201d part.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>\u201cForgetting it,\u201d that is, completely trusting in Jesus to solve our problem\u2014 in His own time and in His own way\u2014 that can oftentimes be much more difficult!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>All too often we take a problem to Jesus in prayer but then <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">we <\/b>try to figure out a way that <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">we <\/b>can solve that problem all on our own!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>This is where I sometimes struggle\u2014 or perhaps I should say stumble.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When I am faced with a problem in my personal life or when I am faced with a problem in my professional life I do indeed include that problem in my nightly prayers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But sometimes I lay awake at night trying to figure out how I can solve that problem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about that problem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s why I\u2019ve learned to end each of my bedtime prayers with the words, \u201cHelp me to trust in Your plan, in Your power and in Your promises.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(I like alliteration!)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I sleep a lot better when I not only commit my problem to the Lord in prayer, but also \u201cforget\u201d my problem and trust that He (Pointing to the cross) will take care of it!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>A passage of Scripture that ties in very well with <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">Commit It and Forget It!<\/i><\/b> is Romans 8:32, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cHe who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all\u2014 how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things!\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As surely as we trust that our God has solved our \u201cbiggest Problem\u201d by sending His own Son to suffer and die on the cross in order to complete pay for all of our sins (Pointing to the cross), so also we can trust that the Lord our God will indeed take care of all these \u201clittle problems\u201d we encounter as we journey through this world!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">Ron Popeil may still be remembered by some for his rotisserie oven and his catchy saying, \u201cSet it and Forget it!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But as time passes by fewer and fewer people will remember him or his inventions.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The example that Mary gave us at the wedding at Cana, however, will be remembered by God\u2019s people until the very day that her Son returns to this earth in all of His power, majesty and glory.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>My prayer then this morning is that whenever you encounter a problem in your life that you follow Mary\u2019s example here in John 2.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Commit your problem to the Lord in prayer and forget it!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Forget that problem by trusting that He (Pointing to the cross) will take care of it.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">To God be the glory!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span
