2018<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Isaiah 22:20-22<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Oh, Come, O Key of David! <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">One of the things that I have learned to both admire and appreciate is the fact that the Bible is filled with wonderful little details.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Many times, however, we simply read these little details and just keep on going with hardly even giving them a second thought.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The result is that all too often we miss out on the \u201cdepth\u201d and the \u201crichness\u201d of the holy inspired Word of our God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But when we slow down, when we take the time to actually study the Bible instead of just reading the Bible then the true \u201cwealth\u201d of Scripture unfolds before our very eyes!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Our sermon text for today is just one example of this.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In Isaiah 22:20-22 we are told, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cIn that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">&nbsp;<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">As we conclude our sermon series on the Advent hymn \u201cOh, Come, Oh, Come Emmanuel\u201d we focus our attention on the fourth stanza of this hymn.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Once again our sermon theme is the opening words of the stanza we are studying:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">Oh, Come, O Key of David!<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As we look at the term <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> this morning we want to do two things.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>First, we want to remember the historical significance of this term.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then, we want to rejoice in the eternal importance of this term.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">The term <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> is found only once in the Old Testament Scriptures.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is right here in our text where it is referred to as <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe key to the house of David.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The historical significance of this term is actually quite simple and very easy to understand.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Every king appointed someone to serve as his <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cpalace administrator.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Whoever was the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cpalace administrator\u201d<\/i> held a very important position.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He was second in power and authority only to the king.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cpalace administrator\u201d<\/i> this individual held a key which was carried slung from his shoulder for everyone to see.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cpalace administrator\u201d<\/i> this individual had the power to literally lock and unlock the royal palace.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cpalace administrator\u201d<\/i> this individual had the authority to determine who was and who was not allowed to enter into the presence of the king.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">At the time our text was written Hezekiah was ruling as king in Jerusalem, sitting on David\u2019s throne and living in David\u2019s royal palace.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Hezekiah had appointed a man by the name of Shebna to be his <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cpalace administrator.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But Shebna was a very proud man.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Perhaps holding the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey to the house of David\u201d<\/i> went to his head.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Therefore through His servant Isaiah the Lord revealed that He was going to remove Shebna from his position as <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cpalace administrator.\u201d<\/i> The Lord would then give that position to Eliakim son of Hilkiah by giving to Eliakim <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe key to the house of David.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We see just how powerful and just how important Eliakim would be when the Lord goes on to say, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cwhat he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s power!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s authority!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">In reality, my friends, the historical significance of the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey to the house of David\u201d<\/i> would be one of those interesting little details in the Bible that really would not apply to us today <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">if <\/b>it were not for one thing\u2014 its eternal importance!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> is referred to just one other time in the Bible.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In Revelation 3:7 the risen and ascended Lord says to His servant John, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cTo the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Now the historical significance of the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> referred to here in Isaiah takes on a whole new dimension, doesn\u2019t it!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The power and the authority that the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey to the house of David\u201d<\/i> once gave to men such as Eliakim has now reached its ultimate fulfillment in great King David\u2019s greater Son!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the One who now holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand Jesus has the power to either lock or unlock <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">the <\/b>Royal Palace\u2014 the Kingdom of Heaven itself.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand Jesus has the authority to determine who is and who is not allowed to enter into the presence of <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">the<\/b> King, the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s eternal power!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s eternal authority!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">The eternal importance of Jesus being the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand takes on unparalleled significance when we take that objective impersonal truth that we read about on the pages of Scripture and apply it on a very personal individual level.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s precisely what Jesus Himself does when He says to us in John 14:6, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cI am the way and the truth and the life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>No one comes to the Father except through me.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Because of our sin\u2014 both the sin that we inherited from our parents as well as the countless sins that we commit of our own accord\u2014 because of our own sin we are <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">barred <\/b>from entering into the Royal Palace of our heavenly Father\u2019s Home.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Hypothetically speaking, my friends, if we were to show up at the Pearly Gates still dressed in the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cfilthy rags\u201d<\/i> of our sin and asked to enter into heaven Jesus, the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand would say to us, \u201cEntrance denied!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cDepart from me!\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Mathew 25:41)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Even if we were to set up an \u201cOccupy Camp\u201d outside the Pearly Gates and demanded to be let in, as the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand Jesus would say to us, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cDepart from me!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What I shut, no one can open.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/i>That\u2019s one aspect of the eternal importance of Jesus being the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Not only does He have the power and the authority to <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">deny <\/b>someone entrance into His heavenly Father\u2019s Home, but He also has made it very clear that He <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">will deny<\/b> entrance to everyone who does not believe and trust in Him as their only Lord and Savior.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Pointing to the cross)<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">That reality, however, leads us to rejoice in the second aspect of the eternal importance of Jesus being the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Not only does Jesus have the power and the authority to <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">grant <\/b>someone entrance into heaven, but He has also made it very clear that He <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">will grant<\/b> entrance to everyone who believes in Him as their only Lord and Savior!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That glorious truth is brought out in stanza four of our Advent hymn when we sing the words, \u201cOh, Come, O key of David, come, And open wide our heavenly home.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">When we trust that the Child of Bethlehem <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">is <\/b>Emmanuel, the true Son of God who came into this world as the true Son of Man to save <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">us <\/b>from <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">our <\/b>sin, when we trust that the Child of Bethlehem was speaking the absolute Gospel Truth when He said from the cross <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cIt is finished!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>\u201cI have reached my goal!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><\/i>\u201cYour sins <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">are <\/b>forgiven!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(John 19:30) <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">then <\/b>we have the confidence of knowing that when we reach the Pearly Gates our Brother Jesus, the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand will open those gates wide and say to us with a smile on His face, \u201cWelcome Home!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s what Christmas is all about, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s why Christmas is a time of comfort and joy for sinners like us!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Christmas keeps us centered on the eternal importance of knowing that Jesus, <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">our <\/b>Brother, is the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d <\/i>in his Hand!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">There is just one more truth, however, that I need to bring out before I can close this morning.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Listen carefully.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">You <\/b>are modern day Eliakims.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His hand has now entrusted <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">you <\/b>with the \u201ckeys\u201d to the Kingdom of Heaven.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>On the evening of that first Easter Sunday the risen Christ said to His disciples\u2014 and that includes <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">you <\/b>\u2014 <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201c\u2019Peace be with you!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.\u2019<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And with that he breathed on them and said, \u2018Receive the Holy Spirit.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven\u2019\u201d<\/i> (John 20:21-23).<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Like Eliakim here in our text for today the Lord has given <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">you <\/b>the power and authority to either unlock or lock the gates to the Kingdom of Heaven.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If you know that someone is sinning against the God of heaven and refuses to repent of that sin even after you carefully and confidentially and compassionately bring it to their attention, you have the responsibility of telling them that unless they repent they will not be allowed into heaven when they die.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>At the same time, if you know that someone is sorry that they have sinned against the God of heaven, you have the privilege of assuring them that their sin <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">has been <\/b>forgiven (Pointing to the cross) and that through faith in Jesus they <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">will <\/b>spend eternity in His heavenly Home!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>This is what the Church has traditionally called the Ministry of the Keys\u2014 a ministry that God Himself has given to <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">all <\/b>of His dearly beloved children.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cIn that day I will summon my servant Eliakim\u2026I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>By themselves those words contain one of those little details in the Bible which may indeed have some interesting historical significance, but not a great deal of personal application to you and to me.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But, when you read those words in the light of what our Savior says in the book of Revelation, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cThese are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open\u201d<\/i> <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">now<\/b>, my friends, <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">now<\/b> the term <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> holds eternal importance for you and for me!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">May God grant that as you and I gather together here in His house tomorrow night to celebrate Christmas Eve that we will both remember and rejoice in knowing the Truth that is proclaimed to us in our Advent hymn\u2014 the Child of Bethlehem is indeed:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Emmanuel, the Root of Jesse, the Dayspring and the One who holds the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckey of David\u201d<\/i> in His nail-scarred hands.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And may God grant that this truth always leads our hearts to sin, \u201cRejoice!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Rejoice!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Emmanuel has come to you, O Israel!\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"
