2018<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Isaiah 11:1, 10<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Oh, Come, O Root of Jesse! <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">This is the time of the year when certain traditions just need to be followed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>One of those traditions centers on setting up a Christmas tree.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Can you imagine never setting up a Christmas tree in your home?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Can you imagine never setting up a Christmas tree here in God\u2019s house?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Setting up a Christmas tree is one of those traditions that we just have to follow!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But, do you know where this tradition started?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It started in the country of Germany about 500 years ago.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Legend has it that a man by the name of Martin Luther was the first person to bring an evergreen tree into his house and put candles on it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The evergreen tree is used for a Christmas tree because it symbolizes everlasting life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And the candles, or nowadays we use lights, symbolize the fact that the Child who was born in Bethlehem is the Light of this world.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">But did you know that there is another Christian tradition that incorporates a tree\u2014 a tradition that is much older than the Christmas tree?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Around the year 1,000 A.D. someone developed what is now known as the \u201cJesse Tree.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Jesse Tree depicts Jesse, the father of great King David, sleeping peacefully on his side with a tree (or a vine) growing out of his side.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As the tree grows upward each branch bears the figure of one of the ancestors of Christ.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>At the top of the Jesse Tree is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The purpose of the Jesse Tree is to show us that the Child of Bethlehem is indeed a direct descendant of Jesse\u2019s son, David.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">From what I read the Jesse Tree is what gave rise to the \u201cfamily tree\u201d that so many people now use to trace their genealogy.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But, do you know what gave rise to the Jesse Tree?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Jesse Tree is based on the words of our text for today\u2014 Isaiah 11:1, 10!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>This morning then my friends, as we continue our Advent sermon series we focus our attention on stanza two of the hymn \u201cOh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our sermon theme for today is the opening words of the second stanza of this hymn:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">Oh, Come, O Root of Jesse!<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As we study this text we let\u2019s see how it takes us from a picture of humility to a declaration of victory.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Humility.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The opening words of our text for today paint an extremely humble picture\u2014 especially when we realize that these words picture the once proud and mighty nation of Judah.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Isaiah writes, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cA shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was during the time of Isaiah that the Assyrian Empire was flexing its military muscles.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In 720 B.C. Assyria attacked and conquered the northern Kingdom of Israel.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Not long after the Assyrians defeated and dismembered the northern kingdom it unleashed its wrath on the southern Kingdom of Judah.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The only reason Judah survived this onslaught was because the Lord rescued Jerusalem by striking down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And yet, because of her own sin, because of her own rebellious ways, because of her own unfaithfulness to the Lord and to His covenant the Lord revealed through His servant Isaiah that Judah would be conquered and Jerusalem would be destroyed by the Babylonians.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Some 130 years after the northern kingdom fell, the walls of Jerusalem were breached and the city was captured.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>A man by the name of Zedekiah was the last descendant of David to rule as king in Jerusalem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When the Babylonians captured the city we are are told, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cThey killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then they put out his eyes, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon.\u201d<\/i> (2 Kings 25:7; See also I Chronicles 3:1-16)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The once mighty and magnificent family tree of Jesse\u2014 a tree that included great King David and wise King Solomon\u2014 had now been humbled.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That once mighty and magnificent tree had now been reduced to just a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cstump.\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">And yet, God Himself had made a <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">promise<\/b> to great King David, hadn\u2019t He!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>God Himself had <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">promised <\/b>David that one of David\u2019s descendants would sit on the throne and rule over God\u2019s Kingdom <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">forever<\/b>!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(See 2 Samuel 7:8-16)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The fulfillment of that promise is pictured in the words, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cA shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The fulfillment of that promise was then realized when an angel named Gabriel said to a virgin named Mary, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cDo not be afraid Mary, you have found favor with God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Lord will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end\u201d<\/i> (Luke 1:30-33).<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">As a direct descendant of great King David the Child of Bethlehem is that humble <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cshoot\u201d<\/i> that sprung up from the humble <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cstump\u201d<\/i> of Jesse.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But make no mistake, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The humility that God\u2019s people endured when the mighty family tree of Jesse was reduced to a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cstump\u201d<\/i> by the Babylonians was nothing compared to the humility that the Son of God experienced when He set aside the full use of His divine power, majesty and glory and was born into this world as a tiny little Baby in Bethlehem.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Think about it, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus was born in a stable, wrapped in strips of cloth and placed in a manger. <span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;<\/span>He was raised by two very humble yet mortal sinful human beings who were certainly not listed among the \u201cWho\u2019s Who in Israel.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Compare Luke 2:22-24 and Leviticus 12:6-8)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>After Jesus entered into the public phase of His ministry here on this earth He didn\u2019t even have a place of His own to lay His head down at night.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Matthew 8:20)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He was rejected by the people of His hometown.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Matthew 13:53-58)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He was laughed at by others.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Matthew 9:23, 24)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He was deserted by His followers (John 6:60ff), denied by His friends (Matthew 26:69-75) and mocked by His enemies (Matthew 27:27-44).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And guess what!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus endured all of this humility <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">willingly<\/b>!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In his letter to the Philippians the apostle Paul describes Jesus in this way, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cWho, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">made himself nothing<\/b>, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And being found in appearance as a man, <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">he humbled himself<\/b> and became obedient to death\u2014 even death on a cross\u201d<\/i> (Philippians 2:6-8).<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Yes, the humble <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cshoot\u201d<\/i> that sprung up from the humble <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cstump\u201d<\/i> of Jesse\u2019s family tree willingly humbled Himself <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">for you<\/b>!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But why?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Why was the eternal Son of God willing to humble Himself <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">for <\/b>you?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We find the three-fold answer to that question when we sing the words, \u201cOh, come, O Root of Jesse, free Your own from Satan\u2019s tyranny; From depths of hell your people save, And bring them vict\u2019ry o\u2019er the grave\u201d!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus willingly set aside the full use of His divine power, majesty and glory so that as the Root of Jesse, as the Son of Man, as <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">your<\/b> Brother He could set <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">you<\/b> free from Satan\u2019s tyranny.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus willingly humbled Himself and became <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cobedient to death\u2014 even death on a cross\u201d<\/i> to save <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">you <\/b>from the depths of hell by <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">completely <\/b>paying for <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">all <\/b>of <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">your<\/b> sins on the cross of Calvary\u2019s hill!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Pointing to the cross)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus\u2019 willingness to humble Himself <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">for you <\/b>has now resulted in victory\u2014 victory over sin, victory over death, victory over the devil.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That victory\u2014 the victory that was openly proclaimed to the world on Easter Sunday when Jesus physically rose from the dead\u2014 is declared in the second our text when Isaiah writes, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cIn that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious.\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">&nbsp;<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">Over and over again the Scriptures proclaim to us that Jesus, the Root of Jesse, is this world\u2019s <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">only<\/b> Savior from sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Over and over again the Scriptures assure us that because Jesus, the Root of Jesse, has won the victory <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">for <\/b>us there is nothing we need to do, no work we need to perform, no decision we need to make in order to be saved.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Over and over again Jesus, the Root of Jesse, proclaims to all the people of this world, \u201cTrust Me!\u201d Trust Me when I say, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cIt is finished\u201d<\/i> (John 19:30).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Trust Me when I say, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cI am the resurrection and the life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die\u201d<\/i> (John 11:25-26).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Trust Me when I say, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cI am going to prepare a place for you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am\u201d <\/i>(John 14:2, 3).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Trust Me when I say to you, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cBe faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life\u201d<\/i> (Revelation 2:10).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Yes, my friends, as the Root of Jesse our Brother Jesus is the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cbanner\u201d<\/i> that now calls out to all the people of this world, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cCome to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest\u2026rest for your souls\u201d<\/i> (Matthew 11:28, 29).<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s the ultimate victory!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s the victory that you and I now have because Jesus, the Root of Jesse, was willing to humble Himself <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">for <\/b>us!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:normal\">This is the time of the year when certain traditions just need to be followed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>One of those traditions centers on setting up a Christmas tree in our homes as well as here in God\u2019s house.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>My prayer this morning is that as you set up your Christmas tree and every time you see a Christmas tree that you will take a moment to remember another tree, the Jesse Tree. <span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;<\/span>The Jesse Tree reminds us that the Christmas tree is possible only because the Lord our God kept the promise that He made through His servant Isaiah\u2014 the promise that progresses from a picture of humility to a declaration of victory!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>May that victory always lead us to say:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>\u201cRejoice!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Rejoice!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;
