Book encourages me to remember are days such as:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>the day my Savior was born, the day my Savior died for my sins, the day my Savior physically rose from the grave to guarantee my eternity and the day my Savior will return to this earth in all His power and in all His glory as the Judge of the living and the dead.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I depend on this Book to teach me and remind me and prepare me for all the important days that have eternal significance.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">Today, my friends, is the third last Sunday in the Christian church year.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Today is also known as the Sunday of Last Judgment.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Today we focus our attention on what will happen on the day Jesus returns to this earth.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>With that in mind let\u2019s turn our attention this morning to these words of Scripture and see how the prophet Malachi proclaims to us:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">Surely the Day is Coming!<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Using very picturesque terms God\u2019s prophet reminds us that there are two different aspects to the truth that <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">The Day is Coming!<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Some people hear in those words the condemning Law of a holy, just and perfect God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Other people hear in those words the saving grace of a holy, just and perfect God.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">The prophet Malachi lived about 400 years before Jesus was born.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>About 100 years before Malachi was born God\u2019s people had been allowed to return home to Judah and Jerusalem after having been conquered and taken as exiles to Babylon.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Temple of the Lord had been rebuilt.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now God\u2019s people were waiting.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>They were waiting for <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe day\u201d<\/i> to arrive.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>They were waiting for the day when Israel would once again be a powerful and prosperous nation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>They were waiting for the day when the Lord Himself would come to His Temple with majesty and power and glory.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>They were waiting for the day when the Lord their God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, would fulfill His covenant of love with His Chosen People.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But the people of God were not waiting very patiently.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>From the perspective of God\u2019s people <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe day\u201d <\/i>they were waiting for was taking too long!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As a result of their impatience God\u2019s people were beginning to doubt God\u2019s love, they were beginning to say that God was not being <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cfair,\u201d<\/i> they were beginning to ignore God\u2019s Law, and, they were even beginning to <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crob\u201d<\/i> God by withholding their offerings from their Lord.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">It is in that light, my friends, that God\u2019s prophet Malachi says to God\u2019s impatient people, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cSurely the day is coming!\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But for some of God\u2019s people the Lord\u2019s promise that <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe day is coming\u201d<\/i> is a very strong message of Law!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Look at how Malachi pictures that day for the unrepentant, \u201c\u2019S<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">urely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire,\u2019 says the L<\/i><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\"><span style=\"font-size:10.0pt\">ORD<\/span> Almighty.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>\u2018Not a root or a branch will be left to them.\u2019\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">We were all horrified by the ferocious fires that swept across California last year.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We are once again horrified by the ferocious fires that are currently burning in California.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Thousands upon thousands of acres of land were left completely scorched.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Thousands upon thousands upon homes and businesses were destroyed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Dozens of people perished in those fires.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What makes that horrible situation even worse is that depending on who you talk to, at least some of the fires here in Northern California were avoidable.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As you recall the pictures of those fires then also picture this:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The fire that Malachi describes here in our text is infinitely bigger and eternally more serious!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">The fire of God\u2019s perfect justice will completely engulf <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201call the arrogant and every evildoer.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The fire of God\u2019s perfect justice will engulf them so completely that they will be burned like <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cstubble\u201d<\/i> until not <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ca root or a branch\u201d<\/i> is left.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s the power of the perfect justice of God!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">Now some of you might be wondering, Why?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Why did Malachi proclaim such a strong message of Law to God\u2019s own people?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The answer to that question is actually quite simple:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>God\u2019s people had started to become impatient with their Lord.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>God\u2019s people had started to doubt God\u2019s love.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>God\u2019s people had started to ignore God\u2019s Law.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>God\u2019s people had started to <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crob\u201d<\/i> God of the offerings that are rightfully due to Him!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In short, it was God\u2019s own people who had become <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201carrogant\u201d<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cevildoers\u201d<\/i> in the eyes of their God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Therefore God\u2019s people <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">needed<\/b> to hear that <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe day is most certainly coming\u201d<\/i>\u2014 but it will be a day of consuming justice for those who do not confess their sins, repent of their sins and turn away from their sins.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">Do we need to hear that very same message, my friends?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Do we need to be reminded of the all-consuming justice of our holy, just and perfect God?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I believe that the answer to that question is:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">Yes!<\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Unless we are somehow different from every other human being on the face of this earth, including every other child of God, we all have that old sinful nature that wants us to become impatient with God!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our own sinful nature wants us to doubt God\u2019s love!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our own sinful nature wants us to think that we can ignore God\u2019s Law and live however we choose to live!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our own sinful nature wants us to think that even if we can\u2019t get away with robbing a bank we can get away with robbing God by simply spending \u201cour\u201d money on our own wants, our own desires, our own pleasures and if their is anything left over then maybe we will give some back to the Lord.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our own sinful nature wants us to hold grudges, allow animosity towards others to simmer in our hearts and speak unkind words about anyone who has done something or said something we did not like.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Because we all have that old sinful nature we all need to listen very carefully as the prophet Malachi proclaims to us:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cSurely the day is coming\u201d<\/i> and for the unrepentant, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cit will burn like a furnace.\u201d<\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">Now if I were a \u201chellfire and brimstone\u201d kind of preacher I would think about ending this sermon right here and now.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I would want to leave you all shaking in your shoes hoping to put the \u201cfear\u201d of God in your hearts so bad that you would do what you are \u201csupposed\u201d to do and be what you are \u201csupposed\u201d to be because you are afraid of the Sovereign Lord and His perfect justice.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But I am not ready or willing to say \u201cAmen\u201d just yet.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I am not ready or willing to say \u201cAmen\u201d because there is another verse here in our text.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I am not ready or willing to say \u201cAmen\u201d because the good Lord doesn\u2019t want me to leave you shaking in your shoes out of fear of Him!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Once the prophet Malachi had assured God\u2019s people that <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cSurely the day is coming,\u201d<\/i> once the prophet Malachi had warned the unrepentant that the fire of God\u2019s perfect justice is all-consuming, he then went on to comfort the penitent with this promise of God, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cBut for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What a glorious soothing picture of the amazing grace of our God!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">The Almighty God could have said to us, \u201cThe day is coming when I will destroy all the arrogant and all the evildoers, I will condemn all the sinners and all those who rebel against Me and then I will start all over again with people who will fear, love, and trust in Me above all things.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But He didn\u2019t!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Almighty God could have said to us, \u201cI do not want to hear any whining or complaining out of you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>You sinners are only getting exactly what you deserve.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But He didn\u2019t!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Almighty God could have said to us, \u201cI\u2019ll give you one more chance\u2014 but you had better not ever sin against Me again.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Ever!\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But He didn\u2019t!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The Almighty God uses the powerful message of His Law to cut down to the deepest depths of our soul and expose our sin.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Then the Almighty God gently lifts our eyes to the cross of His Son and says, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cBut for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.\u201d<\/i> <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">When we read these words of Malachi with our physical eyes we automatically see that the word <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201csun\u201d<\/i> here in our text is spelled s-u-n.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But if we close our eyes and listen to this promise of our God with the ears of faith we easily hear our God assure us that \u201cThe S-o-n of righteousness,\u201d His only begotten Son who gives us the robe of perfect righteousness that He won for us on the cross, this Son <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cheals\u201d<\/i> us of all of our sins and all of our guilt and all of our shame\u2014 when we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> or <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chold in honor\u201d<\/i> His holy Name.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Think about it, my friends.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> God\u2019s name will we ever need to fear the all-consuming fire of God\u2019s perfect justice?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chonor\u201d<\/i> God\u2019s holy name both in our hearts as well as in our lives will we ever need to fear that the day of judgment will somehow catch us off guard or unprepared?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Not at all!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">How do we do that?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>How do we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chold in honor\u201d<\/i> God\u2019s holy Name?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It\u2019s much simpler than we might think.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Through the power of God the Holy Spirit we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chold in honor\u201d<\/i> God\u2019s holy Name every time we gather together here in God\u2019s house to bring our worship, our thanks and our praise to Him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Through the power of God the Holy Spirit we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chold in honor\u201d<\/i> God\u2019s holy Name every time we read and study our Bible.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Through the power of God the Holy Spirit we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chold in honor\u201d<\/i> God\u2019s holy Name every time we say \u201cNo!\u201d to the temptations of the devil, the world and our own sinful flesh.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Through the power of God the Holy Spirit we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chold in honor\u201d<\/i> God\u2019s holy Name every time we share the Truth of Scripture with someone\u2014 whether it\u2019s a member of our own family, a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker, an acquaintance.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Through the power of God the Holy Spirit we <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chold in honor\u201d<\/i> God\u2019s holy Name every time we place the very best of our offerings on His altar.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>So ask the Holy Spirit to help you <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201crevere\u201d<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201chold in honor\u201d<\/i> the holy Name of the one and only Living God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>For then just as surely as the sun rises in the east every single morning so also the Son of righteousness (Pointing to the cross) will daily rise upon you with healing for your soul.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">I am sure that some if not many of us have a little book like this or perhaps a calendar on the refrigerator which reminds us to be prepared for the important days that are coming up in our lives.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>My prayer this morning is that each and every one of us will stay in such close contact with this Book so that we will always be prepared for the most important day of all\u2014 the day of Last Judgment, the day when the Son of righteousness will arise to heal us for all of eternity.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">To God be the glory!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"
