style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Have you ever stopped to consider how our celebration of Mother\u2019s Day tends to change as we progress through the various stages of life?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What I mean is this:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When we are a young child still living at home, Mother\u2019s Day is an opportunity for us to joyously give our Mom a big hug and kiss and tell her how much we love her.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When we are an adult living on our own, Mother\u2019s Day is when we buy a card and maybe some candy and flowers, give them to our Mom and tell her how much we love her.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But when our Mom is no longer here on this earth with us, when our Mom is walking on streets of gold joyously singing praises to our Savior-God, Mother\u2019s Day takes on a more nostalgic perspective.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now don\u2019t misunderstand me.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Even if our Mom is no longer here on this earth, Mother\u2019s Day is a wonderful opportunity for us to show our love and our thankfulness to the mother of our children and the mothers of our grandchildren.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But it just isn\u2019t quite the same as stopping over at Mom\u2019s house or calling her on the phone and saying, \u201cHappy Mother\u2019s Day, Mom!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I love you!\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Since most of us here today are at the stage of life where we can\u2019t stop at Mom\u2019s house or call her on the phone, and since all of us will eventually reach that stage of life, I debated as to how to handle both our service as well as our sermon for today.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Eventually I decided to stick with the Scripture readings that are scheduled for today, which is technically the Seventh Sunday of Easter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But, since it is Mother\u2019s Day I did not want to give this important day just a passing mention.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Hence, the special worship service we are using today.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In that same light I\u2019d like us to study our sermon text for today under the theme:<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">A Mother\u2019s Day Perspective on Jesus\u2019 High Priestly Prayer.<\/i><\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Since we don\u2019t have time to cover everything contained in this prayer, let\u2019s focus on three points that Jesus emphasizes here, three points that tie in very well with a Christian Mom\u2019s prayers for her children and her grandchildren.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">As you may have already guessed our text for today is just a portion of a very intimate personal prayer that Jesus offered up to His heavenly Father.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was a prayer that Jesus spoke in the presence of His disciples on Maundy Thursday.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We can only image the impact which this prayer had on the disciples as they watched and listened to their Lord pour out His heart to His heavenly Father.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The first point we want to highlight from this text is found in the opening two verses.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our Lord prays, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cHoly Father, protect them by the power of your name\u2014 the name you gave me\u2014 so that they may be one as we are one.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">These words are pretty simple and straightforward.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>While Jesus was here on this earth He <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cprotected\u201d<\/i> His disciples.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cprotected\u201d<\/i> them using <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe name\u201d<\/i> that His heavenly Father had given to Him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Now as Jesus prepares to complete the Father\u2019s Plan of Salvation for this world by suffering and dying on the cross, now as Jesus prepares to return Home to heaven as the Victor, He prays to His heavenly Father to <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cprotect them by the power of your name\u2014 the name you gave me.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>But what is the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cname\u201d<\/i> that the heavenly Father had given to Jesus?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What is the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cname\u201d<\/i> that Jesus used to <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cprotect\u201d<\/i> His disciples and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckeep them safe\u201d<\/i>?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And why does Jesus now ask His heavenly Father to <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cprotect\u201d<\/i> the disciples <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cby the power of your name\u201d<\/i>?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>All of this makes perfect sense when we remember that God\u2019s <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cname\u201d<\/i> is everything He has revealed to us about Himself right here in His holy Word!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In other words, God\u2019s <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cname\u201d<\/i> equals the Bible!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Think back to how Jesus used God\u2019s holy revealed Word to <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cprotect\u201d<\/i> His disciples and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckeep them safe<\/i>.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>When the Pharisees criticized both Jesus and His disciples by asking them the question, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cWhy does your teacher eat with tax collectors and \u2018sinners\u2019\u201d<\/i> (Matthew 9:11), when the Pharisees criticized Jesus\u2019 disciples for picking some grain and eating it on the Sabbath day (Matthew 12:1ff), when the Pharisees criticized Jesus\u2019 disciples for not washing their hands before they ate (Matthew 15:1ff), when the chief priests and the teachers of the law criticized the children who were singing praises to Jesus on Palm Sunday\u2014 how did Jesus <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cprotect\u201d<\/i> them and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201ckeep them safe\u201d<\/i>?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>He used the powerful, revealed, written Word of God! <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What a beautiful example for Christian Moms and for Christian Grandmas today!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>There are so many things in this world that can harm our children and our grandchildren in both body and soul.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As I was writing this portion of our sermon I started to think about how things have changed\u2014 and not always for the better.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>My grandparents had to warn my parents about the dangers of alcohol.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>My parents had to warn us about both the dangers of alcohol and the dangers of drugs.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Parents now need to warn their children about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and the opioid epidemic and the school shootings that are plaguing our country.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Add to that the spiritual dangers our children and our grandchildren face because of the false teachers and the false teachings that are so prevalent in our society today.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>What can you Moms and Grandmas do to <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cprotect\u201d<\/i> your children and your grandchildren?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Like Jesus, you can pray to your <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cHoly Father.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Pray that He will use His almighty power to keep them safe!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>At the same time, you strive to instill the protective power of God\u2019s holy Word in their hearts and minds.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Openly talk to them about what God says in His holy Word.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Consciously strive to help them learn and remember not only what their Savior has done <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">for <\/b>them, but also what their Savior expects <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">from <\/b>them.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The second point we want to highlight from this prayer is found in verses 13-16.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We hear our Savior pray, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cI am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The point we want to focus on here is found in the word\u2014 joy!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus wants all of His disciples to have <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe<b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\"> full<\/b> measure of <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">my <\/b>joy within them\u201d<\/i>!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>With these words Jesus makes it abundantly clear that <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">the <\/b>source of joy for His disciples can only be found in Him\u2014 and not in the world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As we, Jesus\u2019 disciples, strive to be a light shining in the darkness of this world we will encounter a backlash of hate from the world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That\u2019s why we always need to remember that as Christians our ultimate source of joy can only be found in Him\u2014 what He has done <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">for<\/b> us and what He has promised <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">to<\/b> us!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Pointing to the cross)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">What joys do we find <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">only<\/b> in Jesus?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The answer to that question is found by going back to the context in which Jesus spoke these words.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Jesus had just given to His disciples the Sacrament of Holy Communion.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In this holy Supper we receive the joy of knowing that all of our sins are completely forgiven!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In just a matter of hours Jesus would willingly suffer and die on the cross of Calvary\u2019s hill.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In the cross we find the joy of knowing that everything that was necessary for our eternal salvation has been finished!<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>There is nothing <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">we<\/b> need to do in order to be saved because Jesus has done it all <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight:normal\">for<\/b> us! <span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;<\/span>In just a matter of days Jesus would physically rise from the dead.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>In His resurrection we not only find the joy of our own resurrection, but we also find the joy of knowing that when our physical body dies our soul is automatically welcomed into the joy of living in our heavenly Father\u2019s Home!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Moms, Grandmas, keep that joy in front of your children and your grandchildren.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Teach them that even the greatest joys they experience in this life\u2014 and there are many! \u2014 are only temporary.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Assure them that no matter how much hatred they encounter from the unbelieving world for standing up for Jesus and His Word, they have the unquenchable joy that comes from knowing that they are a baptized, saved and forgiven child of God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As you are praying to the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cHoly Father\u201d<\/i> ask Him to protect that gift of joy in the hearts of your children and your grandchildren so that the <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cevil one\u201d<\/i> will never be able to rob them of that joy!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The final point that we want to glean from this text is found in verse seventeen.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Our Lord prays, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cSanctify them by the truth, your word is truth.\u201d<\/i><span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>With these words Jesus asks His heavenly Father to give His disciples the ability to live a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201csanctified\u201d<\/i> life, that is, a life that is holy and pleasing to God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And how can we know if we are indeed living our life in a way that is pleasing to the God of heaven?<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>We hold our life up to the light of <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe truth\u201d<\/i>\u2014 <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe truth\u201d<\/i> of God\u2019s holy inspired Word.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If the actions of our life, if the thoughts of our mind, if the attitudes and priorities of our heart line up with <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe truth\u201d<\/i> as it\u2019s revealed to us in the Bible, then we are indeed living a <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201csanctified\u201d<\/i> life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>If they don\u2019t, well, then we know what we need to work on\u2014 with God\u2019s help and with God\u2019s guidance!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">The Mother\u2019s Day application here is quite clear.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As Christian Moms and as Christian Grandmas you do your very best to teach your children and grandchildren \u2014 by both word and example\u2014 how to live their life in a way that is pleasing to Him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>(Pointing to the cross)<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>No matter how young or how old they might be, as their Mom and as their Grandma you have the right\u2014 a unique right\u2014 to guide them and to direct them and when necessary to correct them so that their life lines up with <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cthe truth\u201d<\/i> found in God\u2019s Word.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>And if they begin to veer off course, if they begin to get lost along the way your love for them will not only lead you to talk to them, but your love for them will also lead you to approach your <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style:normal\">\u201cHoly Father\u201d<\/i> in prayer on their behalf.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">While our celebration of Mother\u2019s Day may indeed change as we progress through the various stages of our life, two things remains the same.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>They are the love and respect that we owe to our Mom.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>May the good Lord grant that we will make sure that we will give our Moms the love and respect they deserve, whether it\u2019s giving her a hug and a kiss, giving her a card and some flowers, or lovingly pondering in our hearts all the wonderful memories we have of our Mom.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">Happy Mother\u2019s Day!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">To God be the glory!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt;layout-grid-mode:line\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"mso-pagination:none\"><span
